Rupert - March 2011

RUPERT

He was collected on the 13th March 2011 from the Catsash area.  He was found wandering along the roadside with one other called Bertie.  We were called out at 6pm on the Sunday evening and immediately went out and collected both of them.

Rupert was in a very bad way, he was extremely thin and weak with a heavy worm burden.  If he had not helped him we are almost certain he would have died.

We have now put Rupert in our sling which allows him to be connected to a pully system when he is in his stable at night, this allows him to move about but prevents him from lying down.  During the day he is out in the garden where we can keep a close eye on him, and should he lie down and be unable to get up we can assist him using the sling.  It takes quite a few members of strong staff and knowledge to help him to his feet safely.  In our experience a very weak horse or pony is very reluctant to lie down as they know that they are sometimes unable to get back up on their own.  So when they do finally decide to lie down they are usually very tired and in need of help to get back up.

Rupert is still a very sick pony, and we are doing everything we can to help him.  He is on steriods to help his damaged gut and antibiotics which are being administered by injection twice a day.
