COCO

We were asked if we could help this eight year old Shetland gelding, who's feet had been allowed to grow and who had not been attended by the farrier for a very long time.

We were shocked by the state of his feet but encouraged that he was able to move quite well.  We usually find that when horses or ponies hooves are this bad that they are reluctant to move, as there is a lot of strain on their ligaments and tendons in their legs and sometimes the pedal bone in the hoof may have started to rotate causing much pain.  He was collected on the Tuesday and we had our remedial farrier out to him as soon as possible on the Thursday.  We bandaged him to help support his legs as much as possible before the farrier arrived.

He has had his first trim, but it is a gradual process and his feet will need a lot of regular attention from the farrier to get them back into shape.  We still don't know if any permanent damage may have been caused, but we are very hopefull for him and time will tell.
